If only the blinds are behind and you can reach them, wipe them yourself and book standard house cleaning instead. Book this one when several of those surfaces need work at once, or the tub and tile need the steamer.

Compared with a move-out visit

The question is whether anyone lives there on the day. Move-in and move-out cleaning is built for empty rooms, so it goes inside every cabinet and drawer, the refrigerator and the oven. Here those interiors are extras you add one by one.

If you are still living there on the date, book this visit; the move-out list cannot be run around full cabinets. Our move-out cleaning services also stop at four bedrooms and two and a half baths, so a larger empty home is booked here with the oven, fridge and cabinets added.

Room by room

• Entire home. Baseboards and inside windows wiped with a wet cloth; blinds, ceiling fans and vents done from the top down; doors, frames and knobs wiped; chairs and sofas vacuumed; floors done with two vacuum cleaners and the wet and dry mop.
• Bathrooms. Tub, sinks and tile steamed rather than given a cloth and a scrub; glass, shower doors and taps polished; surfaces disinfected with antibacterial spray; laundry-room shelves wiped.
• Kitchen. Removable stains lifted from the backsplash, stove and cabinets with a wet cloth or the steamer; the microwave inside and out; the outside of the dishwasher and refrigerator.
• Bedrooms. Every surface wiped and the beds made up with fresh linen.

Note the word removable: an old mark set into a surface may stay, so expect a thorough job, not a spotless promise. If you want green cleaning products or eco-friendly cleaning, or want certain cleaning products avoided, name them in the notes before the visit.

Size and extras

The size of your home comes first, in six steps: one bed and one bath (about 800 to 900 sq ft), two and two (about 1,400), three beds and two and a half baths (about 1,900), four and two and a half (about 2,200), five and five (up to 3,000) and six and six (up to 6,000). In the five-bedroom size the steamer also replaces the wet cloth on baseboards, windows and kitchen stains.

Extras come next, each its own line: a full sink of dishes, one dog or cat, the inside of the fridge or freezer, an oven or double oven, and the kitchen cabinets. A line not added is not part of the job, and an extra that was expected but never added is the usual mismatch. The cabinet extra means emptying them, wiping shelves, walls and doors, and putting everything back, so a packed kitchen takes longer.

• Before guests. A birthday, a holiday or family staying the week.
