Hard Water Stains on Glass Shower Doors? Often Soap Scum
Metro Atlanta utilities report soft water, so the white film on shower glass is usually soap scum. How to tell the two apart and how our crew cleans it.

If your home is on city or county water in Metro Atlanta or Northeast Georgia, the white film on your glass shower door is usually soap scum, not hard water scale. The utilities we checked report soft water, so there is little calcium in it to build a thick mineral crust, and what you see is mostly soap and body oil dried onto the glass with a small amount of mineral bound in. Homes on a private well can be different.
What the water reports say
The U.S. Geological Survey classes water by its hardness, measured as calcium carbonate: 0 to 60 mg/L is soft, 61 to 120 is moderately hard, 121 to 180 is hard, and anything above 180 is very hard.
Every local figure we could confirm sits well inside the soft band: about 22 to 38 mg/L across Gwinnett County, the Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority, Gainesville and Athens-Clarke County. Each number and its link is in the list near the end.
Soft is not the same as mineral-free. Soap reacts with whatever calcium and magnesium the water carries and forms a curd that does not dissolve in water. That curd, plus body oil and leftover shampoo and conditioner, is soap scum. In soft water it builds slowly, but it builds.
Soap scum or mineral scale: how to tell

Look at the glass when it is dry. A wet door hides haze.
| Soap scum | Mineral scale | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Dull, even, grayish-white film, sometimes streaked where water runs down | Separate white spots and rings shaped like dried droplets, or a chalky crust |
| Feel | Slightly waxy or tacky | Rough and gritty, like fine sandpaper |
| Where it forms | Where soapy water hits: the lower half of the door, near the handle, the soap shelf, the tub line | Where clean water dries: around the shower head, at the bottom edge and track, on the faucet |
| What removes it | A bathroom cleaner made for soap scum, a few minutes of contact time, a non-scratch sponge and a full rinse | An acidic cleaner. A mild abrasive is the last step, and only on a surface that can take it |
One glass maker gives a simple version of the same test in its care guide: spots that come off with soap and water point to soft water, spots that need vinegar point to hard water, and spots that vinegar does not move point to water high in silica. If you try vinegar, use a small corner of plain glass and keep it off natural stone.
A door can carry both films at once. Reddish-brown or dark gray to black staining is neither of the two. It points to iron or manganese, which usually means well water.
How our crew cleans shower glass
Our crew starts with the least aggressive method and moves up only when the surface can take it and film is still there.
- Water and microfiber. Warm water and a clean microfiber cloth take off fresh film and show what is actually stuck to the glass.
- Bathroom cleaner, used the way its label says. We use a Scrubbing Bubbles foaming bathroom cleaner. The label for the Mega Shower Foamer aerosol says to wait three minutes so the foam can work into the soap scum, then rinse or wipe. The same label says the product is not recommended for acrylic fixtures, so we check what the tub and surround are made of before we spray and keep it off acrylic.
- Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser, only if film remains, and only on the glass. A small amount goes on a damp sponge, we rub lightly, and we rinse it off completely. The maker says to rinse within one minute of application and to leave the product on no longer than that.
- Rinse and dry. A full rinse, then a dry cloth, so no cleaner dries back onto the glass.
The limits we work within:
- Bar Keepers Friend’s maker does not recommend the Soft Cleanser on marble and tells people to keep its cleansers off granite, painted surfaces and mirrors. Our own rule adds acrylic and colored grout, because an abrasive cream can dull one and lighten the other.
- Every product is tested on a hidden spot first.
- The fan runs or the door stays open, and the crew wears gloves.
- One product at a time, rinsed off before the next. Bleach is never mixed with an acid or with ammonia. Bleach with an acid gives off chlorine gas, and bleach with ammonia produces chloramines. The Soft Cleanser is acidic.
Read the label on your own bottle before you copy any of this. The label outranks any article, ours included.
On a deep cleaning visit the bathtub, sinks and tiles are cleaned with a steamer, and the glass, shower doors and taps are polished. A standard house cleaning visit also covers the shower, tiles, shower doors and taps, without the steamer.
When to stop scrubbing
Some cloudiness is not a deposit. Cleaning removes what sits on the glass and nothing else.
- Etched glass. If the door is clean and dry, feels smooth, and still looks frosted or cloudy in patches, the surface itself is damaged. No cleaner clears that, and scrubbing harder adds scratches.
- Coated glass. Some enclosures come with a factory protective coating. Follow the enclosure maker’s care sheet over any general advice. Guardian’s guide for its ShowerGuard glass, for example, says to avoid abrasive cleaners, abrasive brushes and razor blades, and names hydrofluoric and phosphoric acid as corrosive to the coating and the glass. If we cannot tell whether a door is coated, we stop at step two.
- What a visit can and cannot do. We can take off soap film and light mineral spotting and tell you what is left. We do not polish out etching or scratches, and we do not put a new coating on the glass. That is work for a glass company.
Keeping the film off between visits

- Squeegee the glass after the last shower of the day, or wipe it with a dry cloth.
- Try a liquid body wash in place of bar soap. Traditional bar soap is the classic source of the curd described above, and many body washes are detergent-based and tend to leave less. We found no manufacturer figure for how much less, so treat it as an experiment.
- Run the bath fan during the shower and for a while after, and leave the door or curtain open so the enclosure dries.
Water by city
- Duluth and other Gwinnett County water customers: 1.34 grains per gallon on average, about 23 mg/L, drawn from Lake Lanier, on the county’s drinking water quality page. Some cities in the county run their own systems, so check the name on your bill. See deep cleaning in Duluth.
- Marietta: the city buys its water from the Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority, which gives about 38 mg/L in its water FAQ. See deep cleaning in Marietta.
- Gainesville: 21.77 mg/L in the city’s 2023 water quality report. See deep cleaning in Gainesville.
- Athens: 32 mg/L total hardness in the first-quarter 2026 tap water analysis. See deep cleaning in Athens.
- Private wells: none of these numbers apply. Well water is not covered by a utility report, and University of Georgia Extension notes that iron leaves reddish-brown stains and manganese leaves dark gray to black ones on sinks, fixtures and toilets.
Where a utility report gave no hardness number, we left that system out.
Frequently asked questions
Does Atlanta have hard water?
We did not find a hardness figure in the City of Atlanta’s own water quality report when we checked, so we do not quote one. The nearby systems that do publish a number, in Gwinnett, Cobb, Gainesville and Athens, all report soft water on the USGS scale.
Will vinegar remove soap scum from shower glass?
Vinegar is an acid, so it suits mineral spots better than a waxy soap film. A bathroom cleaner made for soap scum, left on for the time its label gives, does more. Never combine vinegar with bleach.
Can I use Bar Keepers Friend on glass shower doors?
The maker lists glass shower doors among the surfaces for its Soft Cleanser. Test a hidden corner, use a small amount, rinse within a minute, and skip it on coated glass unless the enclosure maker allows a mild abrasive.
Why is my shower glass still cloudy after cleaning?
Either film is still on it, or the glass is etched. Dry the door and run a fingertip over the haze. Waxy or gritty means there is more to remove. Smooth and still cloudy points to damage in the glass.
How often should shower glass be cleaned?
A door that is squeegeed after use needs far less work at each cleaning than one left to air-dry. If film is visible again before the next visit, the routine between visits is the thing to change first.
How we made this guide
Written by the Bozman Cleaning team in Winder, Georgia. The cleaning order follows our crew’s product rules and the manufacturers’ labels. A research draft was assembled with AI assistance, and every figure in the text was then checked against the linked sources in October 2026. Product names belong to their owners. We name them only to identify what we use, and we have no relationship with these companies.
